According to reports, a solar-powered air-conditioning system for trucks has been successfully developed and will be available by early 2012. The solar system called i-Cool is a creative work. Mitsubishi Chemical Co., Ltd., ICL Co., Ltd. and Japan's Flurhoff Co., Ltd. developed the system and adopted a series of photovoltaic cells from Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation. It is mounted on the truck's container on the seat of the Japan-based Flurhoff Co., Ltd. to drive the air-conditioner inside the container. The truck can also be used when it is stationary.

This new system is to install photovoltaic cells in ICL's "i-Cool" system. The i-Cool air conditioner charges the battery while the truck is in motion, and uses the battery when the truck's engine is off. With the addition of solar cells, it is guaranteed that the battery is always full.

When the truck is stationary, the i-Cool solar system can save about 1.8 liters of light oil per hour; on average, the truck saves about 1% of fuel annually, depending on the weather and the driving environment. For a 10-ton truck, this would mean saving about 1,500 liters of light oil per year.

The photovoltaic cells of the i-Cool Solar System are thin-film batteries that are mounted on the top two wings of the container and cling to the top of the container. This area provides a relatively large area for collecting solar energy. The maximum output power is 900W, and the remaining power is stored in the battery for cloudy use.

Mitsubishi Chemical, the largest chemical manufacturing company in Japan, estimates that if all Japanese trucks (about 1.4 million) use the i-Cool solar system, the country’s carbon emissions will be reduced by 1.65 million tons.

These companies plan to test this truck air conditioning system so that it can be launched in 2012. At the same time, a small system suitable for cars is planned. Japan's Kyocera Corp. produces thin-film solar panels that can be mounted on the roof, ready for the next-generation Toyota Prius hybrid vehicle.
