The French manufacturing company Soitec stated: "It uses microprocessor-produced solar cells, and its conversion efficiency has reached a record 46%, which will be twice as high as using traditional battery technology to convert sunlight into electricity." The production is more complex, but using existing manufacturing technology is expected to reduce its production costs. Ordinary solar cells use a semiconductor to convert sunlight into electricity. The see-and-not-rescue batteries produced by Soitec will have four semiconductors, each oriented toward different parts of the sun.
Soitec produced the first component with four semiconductors about a year ago. Since then, it has rapidly increased its efficiency. The company’s solar cells appear to be expected to be the first company to achieve 50% conversion efficiency. This is a long-awaited milestone. In the past few years, the cost of solar power has dropped by more than 80%, mainly because the company has found a cheaper way to manufacture traditional silicon solar cells. However, solar power is still more expensive than fossil fuels in most areas.
