Recently, engineers from Harvard University developed the world's smallest robot arm called MilliDelta. It is only a few millimeters, can carry out accurate selection, packaging and production work, and even can be used in some minimally invasive surgery.
In 2011, a research team at Harvard’s Wyssyan Institute developed a flat-fabrication technology for micro-robots, which they called pop-up MEMS. In the past few years, researchers have put this idea into action. To this end, they have created a self-assembling crawler robot and an agile robot robot Robobee. The latest MilliDelct is also made using this technology.
MilliDelta is made of a composite laminated structure and multiple flexible joints. Besides being able to achieve the same dexterity as a full-size Delta robot, it can also operate in a space as small as 7 cubic millimeters and can control the accuracy to 5 microns. . MilliDelta's own size is only 15 x 15 x 20 mm.
This small robotic arm can imitate the various applications of its larger brothers and sisters, finding useful applications in the selection and packaging of small objects, such as laboratory electronic components, batteries, or as a stable hand for microsurgery. Currently, MilliDelta has completed its first surgery and participated in a device test to treat human first tremors.
