Zhang Fuqin, director of the China Petroleum Planning Institute's Institute of Refining and Chemicals, said that China's ethylene industry will vigorously develop 800,000 to 1 million tons of equipment, including the expansion of existing installations and new large-scale installations. It is estimated that in 2010 China's ethylene demand will be 25 to 26 million tons, while its production capacity will be 14 million tons, which can only meet the demand of 55%; in 2020, the ethylene demand will reach 37 million to 41 million tons, with a production capacity of 23 million. Tons, can only meet 60% of demand. The increase in production capacity cannot satisfy the need. A key reason is that China lacks large-scale ethylene equipment. According to the calculation of 17 additional large-scale ethylene plants in the next 10 years, the demand for this market during this period will reach around 119 billion yuan.

According to reports, China's large-scale domestic petrochemical equipment has achieved a number of breakthroughs in recent years. New types of cracking furnaces with Chinese characteristics have been successfully developed, large-scale ethylene spherical tanks have been fully domesticated, and the manufacture of ethylene 'three machines' (crack gas compressors, propylene compressors, and ethylene compressors) has also achieved localization. Sinopec has used a large number of domestically produced ethylene complete sets of equipment in the ethylene transformation of Yanshan, Yangtze, Shanghai, Qilu and other enterprises, of which the domestic production rate of 600,000-ton ethylene equipment has reached around 70%.

However, Zhang Fuqin reminded that at present, compared with foreign countries, ethylene equipment in China mainly has problems such as low R&D manufacturing capacity, high equipment energy consumption, and poor maintenance. In order to share the benefits of this huge market, we must speed up the process of localization, increase technological innovation in enterprises, achieve key breakthroughs in key technologies and equipment, and form the integration of equipment design, manufacturing, after-sales service, and quality assurance systems. Wu Yongbin, director of the China National Machinery Industry Federation’s major technical equipment office, said that in the next five years, China will digest, absorb, innovate and independently develop key technologies, and strive to achieve localization of large-scale ethylene equipment of one million tons.
