Wartsila supplies BWMS to 6 bulk carriers
Recently, the Wartsila company in Finland will supply ballast water treatment systems (BWMS; Ballast Water Management Systems) for six new bulk carriers under construction in Namura (Japan) Shipbuilding and Onomichi (: Onomichi).
It is understood that the company signed a total of 12 "Wartsila Aquarius UV" supply contracts for six bulk carriers in October. The relevant contract was the first Warsila product contract signed in Japan in the same month after Japan officially signed the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Ballast Water Management Convention, which must install equipment (BWMS or BWTS).
Namura Shipbuilding plans to equip four BWMSs with a processing capacity of up to 500m3 per hour on two 34000DWT-class bulk carriers under construction. Onomichi Shipbuilding will equip eight BWMSs with a processing capacity of up to 1000m3 per hour in four 60000DWT grades. On the cargo ship; each ship will be equipped with 2 BWMS.
Wartsila plans to deliver the product from the end of 2014 to mid-2016.
In addition, recently, following Japan, Turkey has also formally signed the Convention on the Management of Ships' Ballast Water. In order to meet the requirements of the relevant conventions, which account for more than 35% of the world's merchant tonnage and more than one year after the signing of the Convention by 30 countries, 43 countries and 32.54% of the total tonnage have signed the Convention. The Convention can only take effect if it meets the condition of about 2.46% of the gross tonnage, that is to say, the entry into force is close at hand.
If the Convention comes into force, up to 40,000 ships worldwide are obliged to install BWMS.
