Musk: Tesla is expected to build a plant in China this year

Musk stated that Tesla’s current business in mainland China is "well progressing." At present, Tesla has established 15 physical stores in seven major cities in mainland China. Musk also said that the company currently has 340 super charging stations and over 1600 charging stations in the Chinese market.

But Musk believes that, like all other foreign automakers, Tesla must own its own factory in China. China imposes high taxes on imported vehicles, and these costs will eventually be passed on to local consumers. One of the ways to avoid these high import excise taxes is to build Tesla’s own factory in China. This will enable Tesla to ensure that its own vehicles will be cheaper and will also create jobs for the local people.

Although Musk did not disclose the location of the company’s first electric car manufacturing plant in China, he stated that he hopes to find a specific location of a Chinese manufacturer's partner and automobile factory by the middle of 2016.
