According to a report on March 11, NEC Lighting developed an organic EL lighting panel that is as transparent as glass. The manufacturing process is to replace the aluminum electrode on the glass substrate with a transparent ITO (indium tin oxide) film used in the smart phone touch panel. It is expected to be used in the display of the window, and it is planned to be commercialized after 2015. The organic EL illumination panel is generally an electrode on which an ITO film is formed on a glass substrate, and then a light-emitting layer of an organic material or the like is formed thereon, followed by an aluminum electrode. NEC illumination also uses ITO for electrodes formed on organic materials.
The aluminum electrode is formed by vapor deposition, and the ITO conductive film uses a sputtering technique in which a voltage is applied to the material to cause a chemical reaction, and then only the desired atoms are taken out. However, since sputtering is affected by enthalpy and ultraviolet rays generated by collision of atoms, there is a problem that organic materials are easily deteriorated and flares occur. NEC illumination has successfully established a manufacturing process that minimizes damage to organic materials by adjusting the amount of gas and oxygen used for sputtering.
The prototype organic EL illumination panel is a square with a side length of 20 cm and a transmittance of about 70. The luminous efficiency is 35 lumens per watt. In terms of life, the yellow bulb color is about 20,000 hours. By adjusting the ratio of red, green and blue on the luminescent layer, the color matching can be freely changed. The price of a square panel with a side length of 20 cm is planned to be around 10,000 yen when it is scheduled to be released in 15 years.
For windows, light can be emitted from windows at night for lighting. When used as a window, some windows can be illuminated at night, and text can be displayed.
NEC Lighting has received assistance from Japan's New Energy Industry Technology Development Agency (NEDO) and is promoting the development of organic EL lighting.
